DUG offers neighborhoods the essential resources for community gardens, including on-going technical expertise with:

  1. Securing sustainable land for gardens;
  2. Designing and building gardens;
  3. Supporting garden organization, leadership, outreach and maintenance;
  4. Utilizing gardens as extraordinary places for learning and healthy living; and
  5. Linking gardens with related local food system projects and policy.

DUG envisions a thriving and connected network of deeply-rooted community gardens, conceived of, cultivated and supported by local residents and institutions throughout the urban neighborhoods of Metro Denver.

DUG was created in 1985 with a handful of volunteers who created three gardens in northwest Denver. In 2010, DUG celebrated 25 years of service to Metro Denver, and broke ground on our 100th community garden. In addition to building and supporting community gardens across metro Denver, Denver Urban Gardens operates DeLaney Community Farm, an urban community supported agriculture project, the Master Composter Training Program, the Master Community Gardener Training Program, and provides extensive education in nutrition and gardening in Denver schools.

As we move forward, our mission remains as relevant today as it was in 1985. Critical to our mission is the belief that we need to come alongside neighborhoods, in a support role, as they work to create their own urban community gardens. We seek to enable, unite and empower participants to reach out and build their community.

DUG gardens have become a community focus for producing food, fostering neighborhood activities and hosting education programs for over 32,000 individuals annually.
